Clinical news 12/09/2023

The ESCEO-IOF Expert Working Group (under auspices of WHO Collaborating Centre for Epidemiology of Musculoskeletal Health and Aging) has recently published an article in Osteoporosis International. This article recommends the use of Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) in clinical practice for the management of primary and secondary osteoporosis.

It states that TBS is also useful for guiding clinical decisions on osteoporosis treatment initiation and to monitor the effect of treatment alongside bone mineral density (BMD) and clinical risk factors within clinical context. The article states that TBS enhances fracture risk assessment and treatment decision-making and should be used alongside FRAX and/or bone mineral density (BMD).

To help and guide you in your clinical decision-making on a daily basis, we have created a summary of this article including both statements and workflow-example.

This document provides a guide on the use and interpretation of TBS in the clinical workflow, from scan acquisition and fracture risk assessment to treatment decision-making. Step-by-step, it also summarizes Appendix 1 of the article by the International Expert Working Group of the ESCEO-IOF, under the auspices of WHO Collaborating Centre for Epidemiology of Musculoskeletal Health and Aging, published in Osteoporosis International.
